We all love HIM songs because of the lyrics and music, but Ville Valo’s unique vocals have always been one of the favorite aspects in the HIM music according to almost every fan. In this article we will focus on the Ville Valo Vocal Range, which is one of the most astonishing characteristic qualities of the Finnish singer.
Like for most of the rock bands, the voice it’s definitely the most important aspect, and it’s no exception for HIM.
It’s difficult trying to describe Ville Valo’s voice: with all his sighs, screams and low notes it’s certainly another league in the rock scene.
Ville Valo voice type
Ville is a baritone, but according many others he might be a bass-baritone, who actually trained to have a lighter overall voice for singing, in order to best fit for the sound of the HIM music.
His vocal range is C1 – B♭6 [ 5 Octaves 5 Notes 1 Semitone ].
Ville, kept experimenting with new styles and ranges during the years. We could mention the super low Sleepwalking past hope:
I gave up long agoVille Valo’s vocal range here reached C2
Painting love with crimson flow
Ran out of blood and hope
So I paint you no more
Or the impressive high and clear notes in Shatter me with hope:
Run, come shatter me now, shatter me with hopeVille Valo hits a F♯5
Crawl, come breathe me in, bleed out all sorrows
Scream me a dream, untouched by shadows
Baby, shatter me now, shatter me now
Shatter me with hope
he IS naturally a bass-baritone who developed a light/thinner approach to singing to fit his music (probably unintentionally), but it’s all pretty grey and uncertain anyways. One oddity is that his mid range timbre was slightly darker on the earliest HIM demos but his lows were more “squashed” sounding until It’s All Tears happened.
